Reader Comments on Terri Schindler Schiavo

Hi, I just came across your site while actually researching feminism, and I read one of your articles, but the part that I'm wondering about is the Terri Shiavo case. God would apparently want Terri to die, correct? Because without modern mechanisms she would be dead. I do not agree with your views on abortion and euthanasia, but I do understand them. Supporting Terri Shaivo's "right to live" would almost be the same thing as supporting other modern practices, such as abortion. I'm not trying to critisize, just understand.
- Cassie S.

Dear Cassie,

Thank you for taking the time to write.

No human being can read the mind of God and say, "God would want this particular person to die." We can, however, go upon God's clear Word, which teaches us to value human life and protect it. God has laid out guidelines for us so that we can understand what is murder and what is not. Intentionally taking an innocent person's life is murder. Terri Schindler Schiavo was not dying. She was not a "vegetable" hooked up to a respirator. She did not need "extraordinary care" in order to function. She only needed food and water. In fact, she was no different than an unborn child in the womb when it comes to her care, because the baby in utero is also fed through a "tube" (the umbilical cord).

There is a huge difference between someone dying of a terrible illness (like my grandparents dying peacefully at home after battling cancer) and someone being starved to death over the course of almost two weeks. Food and water do not constitute "extreme measures" to keep someone alive. All of us as human beings are obligated to feed and care for the weak and helpless. I cannot assume that God "wants" a newborn baby to die simply because it cannot survive without being fed! If we follow the line of reasoning you present, we would also have to advocate not wearing seatbelts or taking medicine when we are sick, because, after all, it must mean that "God wants us to die" if we get into an accident or become ill. Modern medicine is part of God's common grace to the human race. He has given us the ability to find cures for illnesses, help those in pain, and figure out ways to give the disabled a better life. We can choose to use our technology for good and for righteousness or for evil. To deliberately kill another human being by depriving that person of food and water is not good or righteous according to God's Word--it is murder. Obviously, we also believe that using "modern technology" to tear apart, burn, and dismember human children in the womb is also murder--it is not in any way, shape, or form "progress."

That's our position on this issue. For a far more in-depth treatment of euthanasia, please see "A Cup of Cold Water for Terri" (parts one and two) on the site.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Jennie Chancey

Dear Ladies,

I felt moved to write to you following the dreadful, prolonged death of Terry Schiavo. I find it hard to comprehend how in our so-called 'enlightened' society something such as this is permitted to happen. To allow a person to die through starvation and dehydration is unbelievable.

I must point out that I am not a committed Christian - although I do believe in God - and equally, I do believe that there should be provision for voluntary euthanasia. I realise that both of these statements put me at odds with the views of your organisation; I accept that our views in this regard will differ and, perhaps more importantly, respect your views.

I live in the UK and here, should we treat an animal in this way, we would face prosecution at the very least. No doubt the same laws apply in the USA. When I heard on the news that Mrs Schiavo had passed on I confess that I found myself in tears - tears not only for the lady and her family, but for the human race as a whole that we would treat a sister or brother in such an appalling manner. For Mrs Schiavo the suffering has now ended; for her family it will no doubt continue.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that there are many who are as outraged as you have been over the past week. It needs to be put in front of us continually. Thank you for being a willing vessel to be used of the Lord at a time when the sanctity of the family has come under attack. God bless you for you efforts. Thank you for standing for truth...something I'm ashamed more christians haven't done. We stand with you in spirit and in prayer for our families, and our nation. All we ask in Jesus name.
Warmly,

Terri Schiavo's death was apalling to us as Christians but I don't think that Christians in general are appalled by abortions from birth control pills, etc or in vitro. All that is ever mentioned is abortion from clinics not birth control pills or in vitro. In fact a church newsletter had an article saying how a couple was blessed by God with 2 children (not just 1) because they did in vitro. The article made no mention of the many babies that were killed in the lab when they were trying to put together viable embryos. Could you do an article on this? ~ Maggie

We've gotten this question before, and a LAF writer is working on an article about this very topic.

I want to thank you for standing firmly for pro-life issues, expecially with Mrs. Schiavo's battle, now lost. I hope and pray God uses your site to awaken many to the sin-drenched state of our nation. ~ Annamarie

If I were to not give my dog food or water and my dog died, my county would be charging me with cruel and inhumane treatment of an animal and I would be sentenced to some jail time. Not only that, it would be all over the newspapers here of what a horrible person I was because I did something so horrible to an animal. ~ Mrs. Connie S.

I visit your web site occasionally and have always appreciated your articles. It has been sometime since I have checked in but tonight I needed some comfort from somewhere and I thought I would see if you had any mention of the Terri Schiavo case. I was so pleased to see that you care very much about her plight. I am sick and angry about what is happening to her and I am very ashamed of my country for allowing it.

I keep thinking that God is keeping her alive so that the powers that be will see that indeed she wants to live and have mercy on her. I agree with everything you have said in your articles and as I watch the news I just want to scream because I hear a lot about quality of life. I have a beautiful little grandson who is Autistic, I fear that ten years from now someone might judge his life not worth living. I don't know what will happen, I keep praying for a miracle but if she dies I want to wear a black armband to remind everyone of her murder. Thank you for listening. ~ Karen S.

I have been so upset about the Terri Schiavo case that I have been almost beside myself for the past 2 weeks since they decided to murder her. For more than her own suffering and that of her family, but for what this means to our country and for all the disabled people who will be more easily exterminated now. I can't believe that people in our country are so blindly slipping down the path of Nazi Germany and other disasters of humanity, but of course it had started long before this, with abortion of "undesirables" and euthanasia and the like. I am Jewish; I am not in a paranoia that "they are coming for me next" but I have the family heritage of caring very deeply about these cases, where certain groups of people are denied their humanity and marked for death. God save us! I read a liberal blog called dailykos.com - every day it sickens me (yet I keep going back, to see what the other side is thinking) and especially so during this case of Terri Schiavo. Politically speaking, I see so clearly now how Democrats (or Liberals, or Progressives) are truly the party of death. The godless believe themselves to be no more than animals, so they have no problem treating each other (especially the weak) like animals or worse. I do not have words for all my thoughts and feelings. I have truly appreciated the attention LAF had given to this matter. ~ Sarah

Dear Mrs. Chancey,

I'm sure you've seen this poem, but just in case, I am forwarding it to you. I received it from a friend, and Mom and I really liked it. She thought you might even like to post it on LAF.

Hope you are doing well.

America The Beautiful
by Chief Justice Roy Moore

America the Beautiful or so you used to be,
Land of the Pilgrim's pride, I'm glad they're not here to see,
Babies piled in dumpsters, abortion on demand,
Oh, sweet land of liberty, your house is on the sand.

Your children wander aimlessly poisoned by cocaine,
Choosing to indulge their lusts, when God has said abstain.
From sea to shining sea this Nation has turned away,
From the teaching of God's Law, and a need to always pray .

So many worldly pastors telling lies about our Rock,
Saying God is going broke so they can fleece the flock,
We've kept God in our temples, how foolish we have grown,
When all the earth is but His footstool and Heaven is His throne.

We've voted in governments that are rotting to the core,
Appointing Godless judges who throw reason out the door.
Too soft to put a killer in a well deserved tomb,
But brave enough to kill that child before he leaves the womb.

You think that God's not angry that our land's a moral slum?
And How much longer will it be before His judgment comes?
And How can we face our God, from whom we cannot hide?
What is left for us to do, but stem this evil tide!

For If we who are His children, will humbly turn and pray,
If we Seek His holy face, and mend our evil way,
Then God will hear from Heaven and forgive us of our sins.
He'll heal our sickly land and those who live within.

But America the beautiful, if you don't then you will see,
A sad but Holy God withdraw His hand from thee.
