A new 'modesty movement' aims to teach young women they don't have to be bad, or semiclad. [This is an interesting look at a pro-modesty movement that Wendy Shalit discusses in her new book, Girls Gone Mild. While we agree that this is a reaction against our "bare-it-all" culture, we don't believe it's just another case of teen rebellion that will pass like any other fad. More and more women are turning their backs on a culture of exploitation as they see that the emperor quite literally has no clothes. Anyone who has studied the history of clothing knows that there is truly "nothing new under the sun." Bikinis existed in ancient Greece; they were not an invention of the 20th century. What is key is to connect clothing (or the lack thereof) with a culture's spiritual and moral decline or revival. Everywhere that Christianity has gone, physical respect and dignity has followed. Clothing isn't about repression; it's about honoring what is special so that it is not exploited or treated with contempt. As our culture has rejected its biblical moorings, it has derided privacy as prudishness and confused exhibitionism with intimacy. It is refreshing to see so many women (and men) learning to dress with dignity and treating others with respect and honor.]
