Hot Button Issues
NOTE:
Due
to the number of questions we've received about this election cycle and
the whole issue of voting for "the lesser of two evils," I am posting a
letter from a reader and my response, along with links to articles we
ran four years ago when President Bush was campaigning for re-election.
Watching John McCain campaign on the exact same issues is, as Yogi
Berra famously said, "
Deja vu' all over again." We simply must not fail to learn from the past, or we will be doomed to repeat its mistakes.
*~*~*~*~*
I have followed LAF for several years now, and have been challenged and
encouraged by the website. The posts over the last week, though, have
troubled me. I realize that Sarah Palin raises some real issues with
those of us who believe that it the calling of most women to be a
godly wives and mothers at home. Several ministers and bloggers that
you've posted recently are writers and thinkers for whom I have a great
deal of respect. At the same time, I am
very
troubled by what
an Obama presidency would mean for our country--in Supreme Court
nominations alone. I know that this election is in God's hands, but,
He clearly wants us to make the best choice with what little power we
have with our votes. Kind regards, L.
Dear L.,
Thank you so much for this letter of concern. I can understand where
you are coming from. I'm married to a man who has been involved in
politics since he was a teenager. For several years, my husband has
served on the board of a conservative foundation and has
helped track the actual records of senators and congressmen (and
presidents), comparing them with what they promised to do when they
were campaigning for office.
Four years ago, we ran a whole slew of
posts on LAF that revealed how President Bush had not fulfilled a
single one of his campaign promises to Republican voters. We tracked
how government funding for abortion had risen dramatically during the
first four years of Bush's presidency and predicted that re-electing
him would guarantee more of the same. We took so much flak for those
stories and heard from hundreds of people who accused us of "promoting
Kerry" because we could not in good conscience vote for Bush.
Four years later, the predictions we made on LAF have, sadly, all come
true. Government funding for Planned Parenthood is at record levels.
The US now funds
more overseas abortions and promotes "safe"
sex as a means of ending AIDS in Africa with our tax dollars. Nothing
has been done to foster "a culture of life," as Pres. Bush said over
and over again in his campaign speeches. Joseph Sobran wrote
extensively during that campaign and famously noted: "Fool me once,
shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me; fool me three times, I'm a
Republican."
Voting for the "lesser of two evils" is always a vote for evil. John
McCain is not now and never has been 100% pro-life. If you follow the
links I have on LAF right now, you can see his record for yourself. He
has simply adopted the right "buzz words" during this campaign to pull
in more votes from the Christian right (people he knows he needs to win
this race). McCain is a neo-conservative who will do nothing to de-fund
Planned Parenthood or end entitlements that pay for abortions overseas.
For Christians to believe otherwise is just incredibly naive after all
the Republicans have done in the past eight years. We have bigger
government than ever before. We have more abortions, not less. And the
Supreme Court nomination scare tactic is a
non sequitur. The worst
judges on today's Supreme Court were nominated and confirmed by
Republicans (see http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=1123).
I would really encourage you to go back and read the sad history of
compromise coming from voting for the "lesser of two evils." Instead of
standing against evil, Christians are capitulating to it as long as it
is "slower" evil. This does not work. God has clear commands for us in
Scripture that deal with the qualifications for civil rulers. He also
assures us that He is the one Who puts rulers in power, including
wicked rulers as judgment when His people disobey Him. We cannot "do
evil that good may come" (Romans 3:8).
If you'd like to read through the articles that revealed Bush's
anti-life record, I've posted the links below. I know that godly
Christians disagree with me, and I am not accusing them of sinning or
being wicked. I just want to urge them to consider the actual results
of voting in fear (e.g. "If you don't vote for bad McCain, then worse
Obama will win"). God is in control. We can obey Him without fear,
knowing that "
The king’s heart
is
in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes" (Prov. 21:1).
God bless you and give you discernment as you prayerfully consider this
issue. I hope this
will fuel the discussion and get people to dig into the actual records
of those who are running this go 'round.
In Christ,
Jennie
