So long as fashion trends exist, Christian women are called to be self-consciously aware of the changing forms of sexually promiscuous dress. Clothes must be chosen, not merely on the basis of whether other women will find an outfit “cute,” but whether the message the clothing sends to men is sexually restrained. None of this is easy or convenient, but obedience to God is never easy or convenient.

For men to show God-glorifying self-control over their eyes and for women to show God-glorifying self-control over their wardrobes, both require obedience to God with greater motivations. Pure hearts are behind pure eyes (Matthew 5:28) just as internal modesty is behind external modesty (1 Peter 3:1–6).

    We should ask ourselves if we would feel shame in being called into the presence of royalty dressed the way we prepare to go among people. If that tank top and short shorts are inappropriate for being in the presence of Queen Elizabeth, then how much more so being in the presence of the King of Heaven. If wearing all that ‘bling’ is inappropriate for an appearance in an earthly court, how much more so coming before the Judge of heaven. We are always in the presence of the Eternal King and Judge, Christian and non Christian alike, but as Christians we should at all times hold that awareness in our hearts. An ancient prayer of the Church puts it beautifully in a daily prayer.

    O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth,
    Who art everywhere and fillest all things;
    Treasury of Blessings, and Giver of Life –
    come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.

    Additionally, dressing with modesty (restraint and decency) imparts dignity to our human bodies, which is also what God desires for us, as He changed Adam and Eve’s hasty and inadequate covering of fig leaves for full coats (robes). The right clothing can give women the dignity, majesty, gracefulness and the commanding presence of a tall ship in full sail. Something that is greater and better than cute or sexy any day.
