With the narrowness of mind for which they are so justly famous, economists are worrying that Canada and the U.S. are falling behind other developed countries in the degree to which women work outside the home. Preferring instead to bear and rear children, these women are seen as reducing their countries’ measurable economic production (GDP) while also abandoning the heroic feminist legacy of economic equality.
However, according to other scholars, as soon as the hidden economic contribution of stay-at-home mothers is factored in the new trend is entirely positive.
