How Major Stores Are Encouraging Little Girls to Dress Like Trashy Dolls
On any High Street on a Saturday, you can see children wearing make-up, children who have obviously spent ages straightening their hair, children wearing T-shirts with provocative slogans. Hardly signs of self-esteem and happiness. Last week, the American Psychological Association issued a warning about Bratz dolls. [This one really does leave us stunned at the levels to which we've sunk as a culture. Not for young readers.]

How Do We Want Posterity to Remember Us?
Egalitarianism has tried to convince women that dressing like a sloppy man is a compliment and a privilege. We here at L.A.F. say, "The empress has no clothes!" [Revised 6/29/03]

What do we teach our little girls?

They toddle onto the stage like a procession of miniature pole dancers. Their cheeks glow with all the health of peach blusher and their lips pout under sticky pink lip gloss. They are five. [From a LAF reader: "An opinion piece about the sexualisation of little girls through end of year dance concerts." Ed. note: I thought I'd read and seen it all, but this leaves me in tears. To strip these sweet babies of their innocence and treat it as all fun and games is appalling. It's awful enough when they are teens, but FIVE? God help us. Not for young readers .]

When Lancelot Comes Riding
The days of knights and fair maidens are long gone. For many young women the question, “Can I carry that for you?” sounds more like, “Prithee, fair maiden! Allow me to relieve thee of thy luggage.” To which they respond, “What century are you from?”

A letter from Christian guys
Girls, could we talk to you right out of our hearts for a few minutes? It is awkward for us to talk about something of this nature, in person, so we thought we would write our feelings. [This is an excellent article for older readers and younger readers with mom and dad's oversight. Here is the perspective of Christian young men on feminine modesty. We'd also warmly recommend the other articles on the Fearlessly Feminine blog. Click on the link below the picture to get to the article on modesty, then browse around some more!]

The Distortion of Beauty
A popular ad from personal care company Dove and their new Campaign for Real Beauty does an excellent job of revealing how photos of models and celebrities are drastically modified — fueling unrealistic expectations in girls and guys. [This is really eye-opening and sobering. Be sure to read the response by Mrs. Mahaney; it's right on target.]

Tesco condemned for selling pole dancing toy
Tesco has been forced to remove a pole-dancing kit from the toys and games section of its website after it was accused of "destroying children's innocence". [Not for young readers.]

Nine years old and wearing sexy underwear
Girls as young as nine are being encouraged to give themselves womanly curves by wearing figure-enhancing padded bras on sale in Irish stores. The National Parents' Council has condemned the practice as inappropriate and potentially damaging to girls' self-image at a vulnerable age. [Not for very young readers.]

Innocence in entertainment has lost its appeal
The corruption of Charlotte Church is a sorry little sign of how innocence and grace have lost their mass appeal -- even as parents claim to want age- appropriate role models for their daughters. A survey of 1,010 mothers with daughters 4 to 9 years old, released this week, reported that 90 percent of the moms "believe there are not enough wholesome role models, celebrities, characters and brands for young girls to emulate." [Not for young readers. This is a very disturbing and sad story of innocence degraded and undermined.]

Pure Fashion Shows
These days Emily Morrow-Fick keeps busy organizing runway lessons, wardrobe fittings and easing last-minute stage fright as she prepares 55 young girls to take center stage at a Pure Fashion show. "It's not just about fashion, a lot of it is teaching girls how to present themselves without feeling like they have to act like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton," said Morrow-Fick, 18, a student at St. Mary's College and the co-chair for Pure Fashion in Calgary. Modest Dress Exchange!
If you are an aficionado of modest, beautiful, feminine clothing, then you know how hard it is to find items that match that description. I find, now that I have a daughter that is getting into the 4T-6T range in clothing, that it is even harder to find clothes that are appropriate for a Christian maiden who desires to dress in a way becoming to her beliefs. Couple this with the problem that so many of the dresses/skirts out there that would fit this description are outrageously expensive, and for those of us with many littles at home it is hard to get out there and go shopping (and trying on outfits) while juggling the two to five toddlers/babies many of us have, and it is hard to find the time to search all over the web for these gems, we need help to get these items with as little effort and cost as possible. [Amy Howard has just started up a Modest Dress Exchange board -- what a marvelous idea! Be sure to visit the board, and I also recommend checking Amy's fantastic, encouraging blog!.]

Femininity & Modesty
These days the striking and beautiful differences between male and female are treated as abnormalities; disfigurements on the face of an otherwise completely neutral and genderless society. Enemies of God’s design have worked tirelessly to shame these distinctions into obscurity, to the point that many growing up now have no reason to suspect that the differences have ever existed at all. It’s no wonder that the woman roused to her innate calling to be a woman is confronted with a confusing mess of conflicting messages.

God-pleasing attire
Modest women know that our bodies are beautifully designed to be attractive to men. They are much too special for cheap, wholesale, public display. [This is a super letter to the editor!]
