Tribute to an Amazing Man--My Husband
He is
truly the man of my dreams, a kind and loving servant-leader. His love
for his children and his vision for their future, and that of his
children’s children, drives him to better himself, to draw closer to
his God, to spend more time in prayer and study of Scripture. All this
makes my husband an amazing man in my estimation, however, there is one
more thing that sets him apart and makes him truly remarkable. Not only
is he an entrepreneur, a craftsman, and outdoorsman, an outstanding
father, and an exemplary husband, he is also legally blind. [Another entry in our ongoing "Men of Virtue" essay contest series. The deadline for submissions is midnight Saturday, Feburary 28. We'll publish the last of the essays by March 2nd, then organize the entries for the public's vote by March 15!]

Why this section is here....
We here at LAF are so thankful for the wonderful men who manfully shoulder their burden to provide for their families and work so hard to protect their wives and children. We would not be able to do our work at home if it wasn't for our marvelous husbands! We cheer for bold, tender, servant-hearted manhood. Because so many gentlemen e-mailed us to request a special section of articles for men, we added this one. All of the articles are chosen by men for men, and we hope you find them encouraging and inspiring.

A Tribute to One of the Strongest Men in the World: My Daddy (Men of Virtue)
Most children
believe at some point in their lives that their daddy is one of the
“biggest and strongest men in the world.” I used to be one of those
children, and even though I have since come to the realization that he
isn’t Hercules, at sixteen years old I now recognize that spiritually
he
is one of the strongest men in the world. [Keep sending in these fantastic essays on your men of virtue, ladies! We are enjoying them all so much!]

Tribute - With a Spirit of Gratitude (Men of Virtue)
It's easy to gain praise if you do something obviously heroic, such as for example saving a baby from a burning house or volunteering to deliver food and medication to a war zone. But most men and women have few opportunities like these, and so it might be easy to miss the nobility of their lives. My husband is a hero - of a different kind - and I'll make sure I acknowledge this, even if no one else ever does. [This is the first of what I hope will be many tributes in our new Men of Virtue essay contest and article series!]

Becoming Men: Feats of our Forefathers
We're all familiar with names like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams and John Hancock. These men, along with others, were our forefathers and the founders of our nation. They signed the Declaration of Independence and wrote the Constitution. They won the Revolutionary War. Not only that, but their incredible accomplishments weren't limited to their adult lives.

Interview with Author of Real Men
A few weeks ago, I passed through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. During my trip, I paused to visit a good friend, R. Cort Kirwood, who is the Managing Editor of Harrisonburg's Daily News-Record. Kirkwood recently published his second book, Real Men, which is a wonderful collection of mini-biographies of ten famous American men. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, I interviewed Kirkwood about his book.

The Modern Day Gentleman
Men and women have unique responsibilities. Both are necessary and both are sorely lacking in our society today. We live in a society where chivalry has all but died, where the common man has become the common person, and any differences in gender roles are downplayed. Yet among Gods people I will say that gentlemanly behavior should not be dead, that differences in roles are not discriminatory but complementary; conveying value and purpose for both man and woman.

The Marks of Manhood
When does a boy become a man? The answer to this must go far beyond biology and chronological age. As defined in the Bible, manhood is a functional reality, demonstrated in a man's fulfillment of responsibility and leadership. With this in mind, let me suggest thirteen marks of biblical manhood. The achievement of these vital qualities marks the emergence of a man who will demonstrate true biblical masculinity.

Cos & effect of poverty
Future historians may record it as a bit disturbing, and appropriately somewhat funny, that it took a comedian to wake people up to the importance of parenting and responsibility.

Darcy's Lesson
God is like this with His bride the Church. He doesnt treat us as seminary students. He doesnt refer to Himself as a philosopher king. Instead, he gives us Song of Solomon. He speaks of us as a lover. He also speaks to us as a Father. In both cases, God fundamentally relates to us on relationalnot rationalterms. This does not mean He never deals rationally, but only that when He chooses to communicate with us, His normal pattern is to speak as a loving husband speaks to His Bride. He doesn't debate.

Throwing out the thugs
It's time to ask ourselves a few obvious questions: Why do we as a nation produce and embrace a pop culture that glorifies rap and hip-hop music, that teaches men to prey upon women and engage in senseless violence, and that is now, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation's recent survey on media and youth, the number-one music choice of teenagers from all races and every socio-economic status? Why is it that we produce, en masse, hedonistic movies, television programs, and Internet content? Why is it that we continue to make ever more graphic and violent video games for our children? Why have we allowed such selfish messages to have such a powerful voice in our culture? [Not for young readers.]

A Father's Day Poem
On this Fathers Day I want to encourage you to love your Heavenly Father by honoring your earthly father. May God help us to rebuild a multi-generational culture of biblical honor for ourselves and for our posterity that it may be well for us and that we may live long in our land.

Dads, We're Creating A Legacy
Dads, we're creating a legacy, no matter what our actions, be they good or bad. We should daily think and pray about what our legacy should and will be to the future generations present in the lives of our children.
